W. T. Benda (1873-1948) was a Polish-born graphic artist who immigrated to America in 1899, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1911. In 1902, he began his studies at the Art Students' League and the William Merritt Chase school. (The latter would later become known as the Parsons School of Design.) Besides illustration and graphic design, he was also well-known for mask making and costume design. His masks were so well-done that he would eventually make them the primary focus of his career.
